The chemical analysis industry in the UK could be set to change over the next few years, as a new global chemicals programme may be introduced.
The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) has revealed it wants a “reinforced and reinvigorated” framework, according to Chemical Watch.
Discussions about what will happen when the current Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (Saicm) comes to an end in 2020 will take place over the next few weeks.
It is thought a decision will be reached at the International Conference on Chemicals Management, which will be held in Bonn, Germany, between October 5th and 9th 2020.
The news provider reported how the ICCA will oppose a binding global agreement for chemicals and waste yet pursue the UN’s voluntary Saicm programme.
American Chemistry Council’s vice president of regulatory and technical affairs Mike Walls was reported as saying “we’re far more able to foster the development and implementation of solutions” through a voluntary system.
He went on to say: “We see Saicm as a key international intergovernmental and industry effort.” This will help create solutions that can be used to assist with “a variety of unique circumstances”.
Mr Walls said governments need to extend Saicm beyond 2020, and commit to broaden regulatory co-operation, not obliging members to duplicate every directive so they can retain their sovereign rights over decisions concerning chemical management in their country.
Saicm was first established in 2006 to improve chemical safety around the world, and its objective was to encourage the production and use of chemicals with minimal effects on the environment and humans.
