No-Deal Brexit ‘Would Hit UK Chemicals Hard’

The UK’s chemical sector has been named as one of the areas of the economy that would be hardest hit by a no-deal Brexit in a new parliamentary report.

Chemical Watch highlighted the findings in the report, titled: The consequences of “No Deal” for UK businesses. It stated that the regulatory divergence in the chemicals sector in the event of the UK leaving the EU without a deal in place would mean that UK firms were “cut off from EU regulatory systems and databases that protect humans and the environment”.

What’s more, any firms operating in the sector in the UK and the EU would be forced to register their chemicals twice. The report described this as an “expensive and bureaucratic process that will reduce the attractiveness of doing business in the UK”.

This is not the first time such concerns have been raised, with the industry and NGOs making similar statements over the past three and a bit years since the referendum result.

Back in June, the Chemical Business Association (CBA) shared a new plan that would make a UK REACH workable, ensuring that UK companies continued to enjoy frictionless access to the European market and vice-versa.

The CBA has found a solution to the problem of providing access to test data. It has submitted its proposal to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), who have said they will consider its recommendations.
