One form of entertainment that has really sprung to the fore in recent times is the outdoor cinema, something that might strike you as a little odd given our rather tempestuous weather here in good old Blighty.
But we’re very stoic folk, it seems, and not even the prospect of a little rain is enough to stop us from seeing what films can be caught al fresco during the summer months. And even if there isn’t anything going on in that particular month, you can even now hire an outdoor cinema to enjoy at home – a really fun activity for all the family.
But just in case you don’t have the space at home to accommodate the screen outside, you can still go and enjoy some really good films, as all sorts of different places now hold screenings – and they’re a wonderful way to pass a few hours. Here are just a couple that you might like to visit.
London
There are three venues to choose from so you could do a fun little movie tour over the course of a weekend. Films they’ve shown to date include Dirty Dancing, Rocketman, Back To The Future, Bohemian Rhapsody Sing-Along and Yesterday.
As well as iconic movies, you’ll find yourself sat in deckchairs with a cosy blanket, a set of personal headphones and tasty food and drink – all with a wonderful backdrop of the cityscape.
The Luna Cinema
This is a travelling pop-up cinema, with all sorts of venues around the country playing host to film after film throughout the summer. Have a browse of the website to see what’s going on in your local area – although we bet you want to travel somewhere specifically for the outdoor cinema there since some of the locations are really quite impressive.
Ascot Racecourse hosted films this year, as did Anglesey Abbey, Guildford Cathedral, Brockwell Lido, Castle Howard, the Natural History Museum and lots, lots more.
NE1 Screen On The Green
Make your way to Newcastle over the summer and you’ll get to watch some of the best movies going, as well as any prominent sporting action taking place. This year saw screenings of the Cricket World Cup, the Women’s Football World Cup and Wimbledon.
Films shown this year included Peter Rabbit, Shrek, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of Music, Wonder and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Woodside Drive In
Head to the Wirral and you’ll find an open air drive in cinema, exactly like how you’ve seen in the movies! There are roller skating waitresses, Kiss Cams, US-style food and drink, and beanbags under the stars for people without cars.
Films on show include Goodfellas, Twister, The Lost Boys, Hocus Pocus, Interview with the Vampire, The Shining and a whole lot more.
