We all know dogs are wonderful creatures, loyal and man’s best friend. It’s one of the reasons they make such good service animals, working hard in security, the military, the police, and in customs and excise. So it’s always good to see these brave, hard-working dogs get the appreciation they deserve.

The Metro has reported on one such service dog by the name of Boomer Woof Brown, a rescue dog that has become a qualified therapy dog at East Anglia University, where he works alongside his human handler, Dave Brown.

Boomer, or BWB, and Dave have been assisting the university’s campus security by providing emotional support to students and de-escalating stressful situations since 2019. BWB has his own university ID card, and even his own email address so students and faculty staff can book sessions with him.

The team have now been recognised for the amazing work they do on campus and won the award for Security Innovation Initiative of The Year. Unfortunately, the planned ceremony had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, but both canine and human donned their best tuxedos for a smaller, socially distanced celebration.

“Boomer’s been a fantastic addition to the team,” said Dawn Daniels, who works as an access and security controller. “Using him as an opening for a conversation, I have seen an increase of willingness of students to approach me.

“This has then started a discussion which has led on to emotive topics such as their mental health and wellbeing, and allowed me to signpost them to the necessary support functions available.”
