Why Chemical Analysis Is Important For Research Into The Earth

Scientific research will continue to have an important role in uncovering the mysteries surrounding the universe and the Earth. However, chemical analysis will be significant in unlocking more information about the origins of the Earth.

The University of Manchester conducted research into meteorites that dated back almost 4.5 billion years ago. Researchers examined meteorites that were carbonaceous chondrites, which are space rocks from asteroids.

The meteorites were analysed for the isotopic makeup of oxygen in the organic materials. According to the researchers, they were able to identify the origins of the organic materials and found that it is comprised of several elements needed for life, including oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, hydrogen and carbon.

Dr Romain Tartèse, who led the study and is a research fellow at the University of Manchester, commented: “The oxygen isotope pattern was similar to the relationship linking the composition of the Sun, asteroids and terrestrial planets.

“Therefore, this likely implies that carbonaceous chondrite organics were formed through chemical reactions in the early Solar System, rather than having been inherited from the interstellar medium.”

The research into the origins of the Earth could be important for any lab to adapt to in the UK. After all, the interest in space and learning more about the Earth will not stop any time soon. In fact, it might be worth considering if lab equipment needs updating to allow analysts to continue their research for the long term.
