Nottinghamshire residents might want to be more careful after recent figures have shown an increase in crime activity in the region.
Annual crime figures for 2018/19 have been revealed by Nottinghamshire Police, showing an 11 per cent increase in the number of criminal acts that have taken place over the year.
While this is in line with current national levels, it is still worrying for those living in the county.
Despite this increase in crime, the figures revealed a five per cent fall in the number of recorded burglaries taking place over the last 12 months. This is higher than the one per cent decline experienced nationally.
Burglaries from homes have dropped by eight per cent, while burglaries from sheds and garages have fallen by 22 per cent.
Chief constable Craig Guildford said the figures highlight the fact that resources are being utilised in the right problem areas.
“Last year, we identified that burglary was an area where a more targeted approach was required and these figures show this approach has started to work,” he stated.
Paddy Tipping, police and crime commissioner, added that as resources are limited, it is essential they are used most appropriately.
“Residents will be pleased to see a reduction in burglary, good performance on knife crime, and an increased focus on robbery,” he went on to say.
While burglary rates have dropped, there has been a 13 per cent rise in violence without injury offences and a 1.4 per cent rise in sexual offences reports. However, these figures are still below the national average.
Homeowners will be pleased to hear that burglary figures have declined over the year, but they should still be vigilant with security after Halifax revealed an increase in unforced burglary claims typically occur once the clocks go forward.
It reported a 56.9 per cent jump in these types of claims between March 2018 and April 2018, and an overall rise of 131.03 per cent by July 2018.
