The overall construction output all work series increased by 2.8 per cent during January this year, which has balanced out the 2.8 per cent decline experienced during the month before.

This is according to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on construction output in Great Britain for between October 2018 and January 2019.

It is likely that public new housing construction has helped to boost figures, as this grew by five per cent at the start of the year.

Similarly, growth of infrastructure resulted in a 5.9 per cent increased during the month, despite three consecutive months of declines. It has now hit a record high of £1,859 million, demonstrating its growing success in the UK.

Repair and maintenance for non-housing work also grew by 9.6 per cent between December last year and January 2018.

Chief executive of Scape Group Mark Robinson told Building.co.uk these signs demonstrated that British businesses were no longer sitting back and waiting for the outcome of Brexit.

“Theresa May is taking it to the wire with Brexit and there are just days left to finalise a deal. With no time to tie up loose ends here, and zero clarity on how the UK can continue to assess essential construction talent from the EU, the industry will likely be left in the lurch,” Mr Robinson stated.
