You might also find that buying chemicals online can be problematic in meeting with regulations. According to Chemical Watch, a new EU project will focus on investigating the sales of restricted chemicals and the CLP requirements for hazardous substances.

In 2017, the Echa Enforcement Forum project checked 1,300 online adverts for hazardous chemical mixtures in the EU and found that 82 per cent didn’t comply with CLP regulations.

Forum vice chair Sinead McMickan told Chemical Watch: “The project will include substances restricted under Annex XVII of REACH and possibly also cover some aspects of CLP, such as CLP obligations.”

Referred to as Ref-8, the project was agreed at a a forum meeting, and while the full scope hasn’t yet been outlined, it’s expected to run in 2020, with results being reported in 2021.

Inspectors will be targeting companies using restricted chemicals and substances of concern without authorisation. At present under REACH article 66, downstream users of an authorised chemical must let the European Chemicals Agency know within three months.

At the forum, Ref-5 was also discussed, focusing on results of this study into safety sheets throughout the supply chain of the chemical industry. The results from this study will be presented at the next forum in November this year.
