Once the staircase suppliers have been and gone, you can step back and marvel at your brand new set of stairs… sure to make a very real difference to the look and feel of your home.

It’s important that you know how to properly care for and maintain stairs, however, especially if you’ve had them made in oak, for instance.

If you decide you don’t want the wood painted, you will need to make sure you look after it a little so it doesn’t show signs of wear and tear. Remember that the varnish topcoat will be worn away by people constantly going up and down stairs, and this will expose the wood beneath, which can sustain damage. And keep an eye on the banisters, as well.

Make sure that you oil any untreated oak immediately to stop it from drying out. Your joiner will be able to recommend products to you, so make sure you ask their advice before they leave.

Simply use a small paintbrush to apply the oil in layers, making sure you cover the entire staircase. Let the first coat soak in, before applying your second layer. For a bit of added shine, use some wax over the oil so it looks beautiful – and keeps the bannisters safe from sticky hands.

Those of you who’ve gone for painted staircases may find it easier to maintain their investment, since the paint will help protect the wood. But do make sure you clean it regularly and rub down any damaged paintwork before repainting. Wash the staircase occasionally using mild, warm soapy water.
