Ladies who have gotten used to regularly attending their hair salon in Milton Keynes will be mourning their appointments at the moment, with lockdown banning them from leaving the house other than for essential reasons.

Those who have highlights will know their roots need touching up every six weeks or so in order to prevent dark – or even grey – coverage starting to grow.

However, as all of us have been forced to ditch our appointments while social distancing and embrace the natural look, the good news is that lockdown could be forcing overgrown roots to become the latest ‘in look’.

An article in Glamour Magazine reassured women all over the UK, saying: “Once regarded as a cardinal sin in our beauty regimes, the root is officially on trend.”

While this craze has essentially been born out of necessity, as none of us can get a professional to touch up our roots and may feel a bit nervous about home-dyeing kits, there is thought that we will be asking for darker roots to be put in even after lockdown is over.

Popular root-enhancing techniques that may be all the rage at the end of 2020 is the ‘colour contrast’, introducing a strong contrast with the rest of the hair; the ‘deliberate root’, which “gives you that ‘lived in look’ that is so desirable”; and the ‘root smudge’, which is simply an extension of the natural colour and blended into highlights or balayage.

Whether people will enhance their roots once salons are open again remains to be seen, but at least they can remain on trend while stuck indoors!
