The RSPCA received 191 calls in just five days in June from concerned members of the public, as temperatures soared above 30C. While many owners ensure their pets are kept cool during the summer heat, sadly many animals are taken ill during hot weather.

Whether it’s dogs left in hot cars, or even dogs suffering from heatstroke while on walks during the heatwave, in the past year there have been 57 heat-related deaths, and a further 126 animals needing to be rescued by animal charities from heat-related incidents.

On the hottest day of the year in June, the RSPCA was altered to a kitten being kept on a crowded hot beach in Bournemouth, being taken on a 200-mile round trip by its owners. The cat, found in a tent with its family on the beach, survived the heat, but this was just one of 72 calls to the RSPCA that day.

A dog in Kent was discovered with sunburnt ears and burns on the pads of her feet causing excruciating pain. The dog was transferred to an RSPCA centre to receive much needed medical care.

As the UK braces itself for another heatwave, with temperatures reaching as high as 35C, it’s vital that pet owners stay alert and to ensure their beloved animals are safe. Make sure they have access to plenty of freshwater and shade, and pet-safe suncream might be needed also.

As well as cats and dogs, owners should keep an eye on smaller animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs as well. Make sure your rabbit’s hutch is in the shade, and there is good airflow, as well as plenty of freshwater.

Large plastic bottles can be filled with water and then frozen, wrapped in a towel, and provided for pets to lie beside to cool off.
