Lockdown restrictions are gradually being eased in the UK, which is good news for all – but especially for those who had plans to move house before the pandemic and who had to put these plans on hold for the last few months.

The government has now published new guidance to help those in England move home while following health guidance. Before now, you were only legally allowed to move house if you had reasonable grounds for doing so.

One of the simplest steps that people are being advised to follow when relocating is to wash hands frequently and, wherever possible, stay 2m or more apart from those who aren’t members of your household.

Those of you now looking for a new home, whether that’s to buy or rent, should note that more of the process will be conducted online, including virtual viewings and making sure that the property you’re in is empty while other people are being shown around. It will also be essential to make sure that the property is cleaned thoroughly before someone else moves in.

You will be able to make use of removal firms to help you facilitate the move, although it’s possible that these companies will have to adjust their usual procedures to ensure that the process happens as safely as can be.

It’s possible, however, that local lockdowns could be enforced if cases of coronavirus flare up again, so it would be wise to make sure you know what’s going on in your community so you know what action, if any, you need to take.
