PRP Therapy For Hair Loss

Hair loss can be a debilitating experience for anyone, having a serious knock on effect to your mental health, with depression, and a significant loss of confidence. It can also happen at any age, with many cases such as stress or illness. There are many varieties of treatments for hair loss and prevention.

PRP therapy is one method that has recently been discussed as it was mentioned on Gwyneth Paltrow’s controversial Netflix series, The Goop Lab. But what exactly is PRP therapy?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. Some in the medical community think that PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft.

Sometimes this approach is combined with other hair loss procedures or medications.

PRP therapy is a three-step process. Most PRP therapy requires three treatments 4–6 weeks apart, and maintenance treatments are required every 4–6 months.

The first step is that blood is withdrawn – usually from your arm – and put into a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly to separate fluids of different densities). After 10 minutes, the blood separates in to three layers – platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells.

In the third step, the platelet-rich plasma is drawn in to a syringe and then injected in to areas of the scalp that require increased hair growth.

It is important to get a full consultation before any procedure, to check that it is the right one for you, and that you do not have any conditions that would make it unsuitable.
