Hydrogen-fuelled cars could be part of the future, after Israeli scientists have found a way to split hydrogen peroxide through a chemical process.
A team of researchers at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) have been able to develop hydrogen fuel from water through the use of solar energy.
They are the first to do so, producing hydrogen fuel without the reliance of lots of man-made energy sources.
BGU researchers Dr Arik Yochelis and Dr Iris Visoly-Fisher and Professor Avner Rothschild of the Technion led the team, publishing the findings in the journal Nature earlier this month.
Manufacturing.net reported them as saying: “This discovery could have a significant impact on efforts to replace carbon-based fuels with more environmentally friendly hydrogen fuels.”
This could be particularly useful for drivers, fuelling their cars with hydrogen instead of petrol or diesel.
“Car manufacturers seek to develop hydrogen-powered vehicles that are considered efficient and environmentally friendly and unlike electric vehicles, allow for fast refuelling and extended mileage,” the scientists stated.
They discovered a breakthrough for understanding the photochemical splitting of hydrogen peroxide (H202) over iron-oxide photo-electrodes.
They have also found that solar energy could be the most environmentally-friendly way of splitting water (H20) into two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, thereby producing hydrogen fuel that is efficient and powerful enough to use in cars.
