You could be forgiven for thinking that Sotheby’s only deals in rare antiques and valuable pieces of art, but the auction house sells a wide variety of items.

One of its most quirky auctions is coming up – a sale dedicated entirely to famous sneakers (that’s trainers to anyone who’s not American). And there are certainly some iconic shoes going under the hammer.

Among the top items is the Nike ‘Moonshoe’. This sneaker was designed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman. Only 12 pairs were ever made and it gets its name because the tread is designed to resemble those of the shoes worn by the Apollo astronauts.

Other items going under the hammer include the 2011 and 2016 limited edition versions of the Back to the Future Part II sneakers, as well as limited edition trainers produced by Adidas and Air Jordan.

Co-founder of Stadium Goods, which is based in New York, John McPheters commented: “We’ve long talked about how sneakers are this generation’s luxury fashion and being able to collaborate with a brand with the history and esteem of Sotheby’s is further proof of that.”

Anyone who spends the tens of thousands of dollars acquiring any of the iconic shoes going under the hammer is unlikely to wear them. Finding the best way to display them will therefore be crucial.
