Staying Healthy During Ramadan

As organisers of cheap Hajj packages we are a pretty popular choice but let’s not overlook the other 4 rituals the Muslim faith is underpinned by.  One of them is the holy month of Ramadan which is rapidly approaching, so many of us are preparing for this blessed season of happiness.

Non-Muslims probably see this is a time of abstinence but to us, it’s a joyful time to celebrate your faith with your fellow believers – a time to be happy to be alive.

There will be love, warmth and generosity pouring from the Iftar tables which are beautifully lit by colourful Ramadan lamp.  This is a season of tradition and wonder at our heritage and as a token of our gratitude and devotion, we partake in Ramadan.

There are many ways to help your body thrive during the fasting of Ramadan, so here is a handful to bear in mind to keep your body and mind happy.

  • Between Iftar and Suhour, drink 8 glasses of water daily to prevent dehydration and constipation
  • Ensure you get plenty of mental and physical rest and sleep for 6-8 hours a day. Sleep deprivation will lessen your productivity and activity as well as cause a dip in emotional well being due
  • to lethargy and tiredness.
  • Prepare balanced and varied Iftar meals which include dates, soups, salads, a main meal, followed by fruits and a small piece of Ramadan sweet
  • Participate in some kind of physical activity such as walking.
  • Fill your body with energy and help regulate your blood sugar with Suhour.

It is very tempting to binge on fattier foods or drink gallons of water to deter hunger or thirst during daylight hours, but neither of these habits will help.

Drink water throughout the night to rehydrate yourself, and eat a selection of food aimed at fuelling yourself for the day.  With a little planning and respect for your body during Ramadan, you can still maintain your levels of energy and vitality during your fasting.  If you are short of time, here is a selection of Iftar recipes you can create in under 30 minutes.
