With a long weekend just around the corner, no doubt there are many of you out there eagerly looking forward to doing a bit of DIY, whether it’s repainting the bathroom or getting out and about in the garden.

The weather is supposed to be lovely and warm this weekend so do try to get outside if you can – but whether you’re in or out of the house, make sure that you only tackle the DIY jobs you know you have the skills and experience to complete to a high standard.

If you don’t, you could find that you end up having to pay out even more to have it sorted out by a qualified tradesman or building company. And, even more worryingly, you could invalidate your home insurance if you take on jobs that you’re not qualified for. This means that if something goes wrong, you’d then be liable for the costs of repairs, if required.

New research from GoCompare has just revealed that 29 per cent of people would try plumbing jobs, 24 per cent would start electrical work and 13 per cent would do their best to fix the boiler or central heating.

You might also want to make sure that you let your insurance company know before starting any serious building work. And don’t forget to let your neighbours know that you’ve got a project in the offing, either.
