Last year, historic native breed the Scottish Terrier was a very real risk of disappearing altogether, with numbers falling so low that the dog was put on the Kennel Club’s At Watch list for the very first time.

But in a rare piece of good news at the moment, the Club has now confirmed that the Scottie dog saw a big jump in popularity during the first three months of 2020 and as a result, is no longer at risk of dying out!

It’s not just Scottie dogs that are doing well at the moment, either, with Jack Russell terrier puppy registrations up 75 per cent, Parson Russell terriers up 64 per cent and Cairn terriers up 58 per cent so far this year.

Chairman of the Scottish Terrier Club of England Til Tovey said: ““Scottish Terriers are affectionate, loyal and intelligent, so we are delighted that this heritage breed seems to be bouncing back from historically low puppy numbers.

“Of course, responsible breeders will always place welfare first, not breeding simply to boost numbers, so we hope to continue to see a steady resurgence, with new owners taking time to research their decision.”

Scottie dogs have lovely thick coats and they do require some looking after, so bear this in mind. Use a pin brush every day to get rid of any mats and tangles, and a coarse toothed comb to sort out any small knots in the hair. Keep an eye on the long hairs on your dog’s tummy and behind their front legs, as these areas are prone to matting.
