We all have our favourite dog breeds, often inspired by happy memories of dogs from our past, or maybe we’re just a sucker for a certain set of eyes or ears.

However, Brits do certainly have a preference for certain breeds, with Protectivity Insurance recently revealing which ones we’re most likely to go for at the moment, based on data about new dog registrations from the Kennel Club.

Buckingham and Winslow Advertiser shared the findings, which revealed that the breed with the highest number of new registrations in 2019 was the labrador retriever. In second place were French bulldogs and rounding out the top three were cocker spaniels.

The top ten featured a wide variety of breeds, from the tiny dachshund in seventh place to the much larger German shepherd at number eight. Bulldogs came in fourth place, with English springer spaniels in at number five.

Golden retrievers were in at seven, while pugs (at nine) and miniature schnauzers completed the top ten.

The Independent recently shared comments made by animal psychologist Dr Roger Mugford, who told The Times that some dogs may suffer “severe social anxiety” when the lockdown restrictions are eased and families start to return to work and school.

He recommended that dog owners separate themselves from their dogs for at least 30 minutes at a time several times a day while in lockdown to lessen the shock when they have to return to work.
